Mate's Crew 2026

Mate’s Crew is proud to be back on the road for Daniher’s Drive, raising funds and awareness for FightMND in honour of Geoff “Mate” Smalley.
What began as a tribute to our dad, husband, grandfather and mate has become something much bigger.
After joining Daniher’s Drive in 2025, we knew this journey was not a one-off. We are committed to continuing the fight, sharing Mate’s story, and doing our part to help Beat the Beast that is motor neurone disease.

OUR STORY

Geoff Smalley, known lovingly as “Mate”, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in October 2020 and sadly lost his battle on 15 February 2022.
Mate was deeply woven into the fabric of his local community. He spent more than 20 years teaching at local schools including Sunbury College, where he mentored and supported generations of students. Alongside teaching, he and his family operated the Gisborne South Swimming Centre for more than 32 years, teaching thousands of children and families to swim.
As head coach of the South Gisborne Sharks Swimming Club for more than two decades, Mate encouraged swimmers of all levels to challenge themselves, grow in confidence, and pursue competitive swimming at the highest level possible. He was also a passionate Western Bulldogs supporter who loved community sport and bringing people together.
Mate faced MND with courage, humour and determination. Mate’s Crew was created to honour that spirit and continue fighting for families impacted by this devastating disease.
Every kilometre travelled, every event held, every donation received and every pair of socks or beanies sold helps continue that mission.

Help us take Mate’s Crew on the road for Daniher’s Drive 2026 while supporting the fight against MND.
Businesses who donate $250 or more will have their business name proudly displayed on the Mate’s Crew vehicle throughout our 2026 fundraising campaign and during Daniher’s Drive. Your business name will travel with us to Adelaide and remain on display through to October 2026.
Our car becomes more than transport. It becomes a moving community billboard supporting FightMND, helping spark conversations, raise awareness, and honour Geoff Smalley’s legacy.
In 2025 we had the amazing support from these local businesses and organisations.
